From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 05-02

As the Lunar World Turns
Wednesday, May 2, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
Well, people, we're really back to normalcy in Lunar World. We have an ordinary "good" day meeting an ordinary "bad" day. It's 50-50, but with a dose of pablum. Let's take a closer look, shall we?

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Mix (). Calendrical interpretations stress that its meaning itself is "mixed." It is a mixture of lucky and unlucky. Building projects are solid; burials are not. It is also not a good day for marriages. All-in-all, though, it's generally, um, sort of, er, o.k.
[b] Mix RF

The jianchu "personality" is Fullness (滿). Here, even though it is printed in black ink, it's not at all bad. It is a day of overflowing "stuff," and the only real downside is, (burp), a little too much of a good thing. It's a great day for weddings (see above for contrast), conferences, and so forth. It's a bad day for household tasks.

Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today: Timely Virtue (時德), Peopled Days (民日), and Entering Spirits (進神).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, four in-between () times, and four auspicious () times. Finally. Two days in a row of "normal" 4-4-4. Just like old times.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
[c] Thatched Covering RF
It's a bad day for Opening Granaries (開倉), Capital Outflow (出財), and Thatched Coverings (苫蓋). Think about these. The first two are often taken, by Hong Kong financiers, as having financial implications.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the seventeenth (十七) day of the third lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #31: jiawu (甲午). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.

Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Metal (金). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Water. Today is Metal, and tomorrow is Metal.
[d] Corn Rain RF

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for twelve different things, including Venerating Ancestors (祭祀), Moving Biers (移柩), and Making Banners (合帳). Click the link for the rest, and have a bier.
Wednesday's Lunar Calendar

Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the sixth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Friday, April 20 and runs through Friday, May 4. It is called Corn Rain (穀雨). We are in the eighteenth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Hoopoe Alights on Mulberry (戴勝降于桑). It began on Monday, April 30, and runs through Friday, May 4.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Disastrous Balefulness (灾煞), Heavenly Fire (天火), Heavenly Punishment (天刑), and Yang General (陽將). They're bad; they're baleful.

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Water (水). The miscellaneous activities are Divination (占), Pestle (碓), and Gate (門). Nobody knows what they mean.
[d] Making Banners RF
See You Tomorrow
Enjoy the mild whiplash of the day, venerate your ancestors, and move their biers. I'll see you back here on Wednesday night for a Thursday preview.
